High-ranking, Wrigley officials from both China and the United States were in attendance for an opening ceremony at the Shanghai plant this past May. Members of the local Environmental Bureau and government leaders in the crowd praised the company for their efforts to reduce air pollutants like Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).
The plant recently commissioned Anguil Environmental Asia to design, build and install a 55,000 SCFM Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer or RTO. The emission abatement system is capable of destroying more than 99% of any harmful emissions coming from the gum making process. RTOs are not only effect at destroying odors and emissions but they are also known for their energy efficient operation. Through the use of ceramic media beds, the device captures waste heat from combustion to preheat incoming pollutants. At 95-97% thermal efficiency, many RTO systems like this oxidizer at Wrigley will self sustain, using no additional fuel for operation.
During the ceremony, Wrigley leaders reinforced their firm stance on environmental protection and commitment to action. All attendees then got a tour of the Anguil RTO and witnessed the system in operation. Anguil personnel were on hand to explain the capabilities and answer any questions.
